i feel terrible. here it is, the week of halloween, and my kids costumes aren't even started. i am such a slacker!
and i really have no defense. job number 2 (max's costume from "where the wild things are"), i had all that stuff a week before i even touched it. job number 1 (the gothic/post-revolutionary war "alice in wonderland"), took me a couple of days to alter the pattern. job number 3 (the mad hatter from "alice in wonderland"), took me 3 days to get started on.
ok, ok, ok. i know i hurt my foot last week, and that's put me behind somewhat. but, i'm still a slacker.

as it is, we were late for the halloween party we were invited to, and i had the hosts' costumes. they were jobs 1 and 3. job 3 didn't get finished in time for the party. i spent the majority of said party trying to finish it to the point that it was wearable. the only things that didn't get done were the bottom hem, and the buttons on the sleeves.
now, job 2 is due by this friday, and i'm out of commission on thursday as shannon is going in for surgery.

crap! i'm in trouble!

I know you guys usually have really cool costumes, but make an exception this time and go as simple as possible! Re-use old costumes, use pillowcase for a ghost, etc. grab a roll of toilet paper for Taylor to be a mummy. cut a hole in the bottom of a cardboard box and use ribbon/robe to make shoulder straps for the top of the box--there, your kids' a box. (or glue wrapping paper and a bow onto it and they're a ribbon once the other kids costumes are done, or just let them color on the box with markers however they want to keep them busy while you take care of Shannon.) Make a game out of how fast the kids can figure out what to wear and to get ready. Good luck!

Thanks to H's suggestion of Sam being a bat (where'd that come from?! but hey, its less work than a pumpkin cuz he actually has a blackk shirt!) I'm cutting some black felt wings and sticking them to the sleeves of a black shirt of Sam's. He'll just have to wear jeans instead of black pants because I don't have time to get to the thrift store this week. Hannah's wearing her princess costume Santa brought her last Christmas. It's huge, so it just might be Halloween for a couple years. ;)
